Launch of AYA Vision 2033

We are excited to introduce AYA Vision 2033, a cancer plan for Australian adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients.

What is AYA Vision 2033?

AYA Vision 2033 serves as a national strategic document designed to guide the prioritisation and implementation of key initiatives for Australian adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer care over the next decade.

It makes a commitment to seeing the best possible outcomes for all young people; that they will have control over their care decisions and access to the best available care and support at all stages of the cancer journey.

Building upon the solid foundations established by the Australian Youth Cancer Framework, AYA Vision 2033 provides guidance and a plan for action for AYAs who experience cancer, their families, and carers, as well as government, care providers, and academics. Through its realisation, young people can look forward, to a future where their goals and vision can also be grasped.

The goal of AYA Vision 2033 is to achieve optimal care and support for adolescent and young adults throughout their entire cancer journey.

When was it launched?

The AYA Vision 2033 was launched by the Honorable Mark Butler, the Australian Minister for Health & Aged Care, at the YCS National Youth Cancer Consumer Forum on 5 August.

The YCS National Youth Cancer Consumer Forum, which is co-designed with young YCS patients and survivors, brought young leaders together to participate in an engaging, two-day program of workshops, presentations, fun activities, and peer networking opportunities designed to improve their skills in leadership, advocacy, public speaking, and project management.

As well as being given the opportunity to learn new skills and hear from inspiring speakers, the young people attending discussed the value of being able to tell their story and connect with others who understand what they’re going through. One attendee said the following:

“I was deeply moved and inspired by meeting the other young people and seeing their strength and bravery in facing their illnesses. I left feeling a sense of optimism and positivity and look forward to contributing to the program in any way I can.”

AYA Vision 2033 is an important step towards achieving optimal care and support for adolescent and young adults throughout their cancer journey. It is a bold plan. But we can aim for nothing less if every young person with cancer is to achieve their own vision for their future.
